quarters

Prepared/installed 2009-2010

“quarters” was created in consideration of Alvin Lucier’s “I am sitting in a room.” in Lucier’s piece, room resonances are repeatedly recorded in order to additively reinforce the acoustical properties of a room. in “quarters” a field recording is “tuned” to a room via a subtractive process, wherein frequencies below an incrementally increasing threshold are rejected. when the recording is tuned to its maximum level, the filter slowly returns to its original state, gradually detuning the recording and exposing the ambient sounds that have been accumulating throughout.
