The Herb Alpert School of Music at the California Institute of the Arts is pleased to announce a new experimental music concert series taking place October 24 and 25, 2009 at the Roy O. Disney Concert Hall in Valencia, CA. The Experimental Music Yearbook is a series of curated concerts highlighting some recent trends and ideas in the global experimental music community. The concerts showcase recent works from renowned American composers Christian Wolff and Tom Johnson, as well as American premieres from such luminaries as Taku Sugimoto (Japan), Manfred Werder (Switzerland), Peter Ablinger (Germany), and Olivia Block (Chicago). Comprised of three concerts, over the course of two days, the event will expose early career local composers to a wider audience. Faculty member and composer Michael Pisaro, along with local experimentalists John P. Hastings and Casey Anderson, curated the concerts and have organized a team of Los Angeles’ finest experimental music performers in enacting the first iteration of this annual event.

friday, 8:30pm
One of the most vibrant and eclectic music hotspots in Europe, the Netherlands boast an exceptional wealth of up-and-coming innovators who are busy expanding not only the heterogeneity and freedom of contemporary musical content — but also the role of music and concert programming in society. This weekend festival is devoted to the work of some of today’s brightest Dutch composers — artists who are exploring new and unprecedented creative horizons as diligently as they are dispensing with the convictions and values of yesteryear. The CalArts New Century Players will be performing works by Michel van der Aa, Antoine Beuger, Dante Boon, Rozalie Hirs, Christina Oorebeek, Edward Top, Matijs de Roo, Joey Roukens, Giel Vleggaar, Peter-Jan Wagemans, and Robert Zuidam. The California E.A.R. Unit follows with an early Sunday evening concert, featuring pieces by Yannis Kyriakides, Mayke Nas, Martijn Padding, Jacob ter Veldhuis and Diderik Wagenaar.
