Here is a nice article, written by Michael Pisaro, detailing the beginnings, and conceptual apparatus behind, the wandelweiser movement. its a lovely article documenting an ongoing large body of powerful work in experimental music.

i was recently asked to write a piece for the new york based TRANSIT Ensemble, for a concert of music by los angeles based composers, curated by my good friend Eric KM Clark. the concert is October 24th, and i am not currently sure who else is on the program (probably eric?). more information on the live page.
i will be performing as part of Glenn Bach’s Slow Sound Festival in Long Beach, CA, in september. more information for that can also be found on the live page.
also, finally wrapping up work on a piece for Jason Schumacher’s upcoming feature film, The Telephone Game.
more to follow.
changes
I’m in the process of making some fairly large changes to this website (as you can see by the new layout), and am definitely in the midst of working the kinks out. also, i finally fixed the broken audio plugin problem, so once again you can listen to everything that is posted here.
news
I just had a bunch of performances come through in the next few months, so check the live page for information regarding those. im still waiting for information on some of them.
im also wrapping up work on a piece for jason schumacher’s upcoming feature film, the telephone game.
in the beginning stages of a piece for danny holt’s “piano and percussion” project.
working on a shit ton of new stuff, and in the planning stages for a handful of installations and computer music.
lastly, if one were so inclined, one could pre-order the All Tiny Creatures four song 12″ from Hometapes, which contains a piece i worked on with Thomas Wincek some time ago. you can pre-order the really nice looking vinyl EP here.
news
I am finally finishing a piece for the wonderful jason schumacher’s upcoming feature film, “the telephone game.” its called “contact,” and is written entirely with phone sounds (which, in my use, has just made the piece sound more analog-y, and not that phone-ish). the film is nearing its completion, as far as i know, and will premiere in minneapolis soon.
i am also working on a piece for pianist, great guy, and good cook, danny holt, for his piano/percussion project. its kind of a classier one-man-band kind of thing. pictures here. the piece is currently untitled, but its moving along, and im happy to say that a lot of good friends were also enlisted to write for this project…should be interesting when danny starts performing these pieces.
news
I recently returned from a three week residency at the atlantic center for the arts, where i was fortunate enough to work under alvin lucier, david dunn, and with a number of wonderful composers, poets, and visual artists. i also premiered the first version of an installation for computer and any large resonance space, entitled “quarters.” i dont have any documentation of it currently, but it will get a much-needed tune up and then hopefully go up somewhere in the los angeles area in the near future.
today was the last day of michael pisaro’s wonderful annual experimental music festival, dogstar orchestra 5, which took place primarily at calarts. i was fortunate enough to play in two of the last three concerts, one of which featured a recent piece of mine (”assembly (melody 2)”). jason grier has made a website which will, eventually, exist as an archive of all the performed pieces on the festival. recordings and video are not up yet, but keep checking here for said documentation. my piece received the best performance it has gotten yet, and was accompanied by lamonte young’s “composition 1960, no. 7.”
about two years ago i collaborated with thomas wincek on a piece for piano, fender rhodes, and computer. we wrote and recorded the piece, and its kind of been in hiding since then. i am happy to announce that the completed version of the piece (with adam braatz on piano, tom on rhodes, and ben derickson on drums), is finally coming out under the name of tom’s current band, all tiny creatures, on zod and hometapes records. re-titled “segni,” it is the title track of the first twelve inch ep by the band. the album drops on august fourth.
im hard at work on a bunch of new things right now…keep checking back for more updates.
also, here are two morton feldman quotes that i am quite fond of at the moment: “down with the masterpiece; up with art,” and “fuck counterpoint.”
dogstar orchestra
Just wanted to drop a quick note about an annual experimental music festival organized by the great Michael Pisaro and featuring a lot of wonderful music and a lot of wonderful people in the LA area. taking place mostly at CalArts, this year marks the fifth dogstar orchestra concert series, and its a joy to take in as well as be a part of. i will be playing on two of the concerts, one of which will feature the premiere of a recent piece of mine, “assembly (melody 2).” more information about the festival can be found here.
in other news, im knee deep in an installation that will go up at ACA next friday, and hard at work on a variety of other things.
it has also been raining in Florida almost every single day. not really used to weather, as there really is not any in southern california (it oscillates between hot and nice, and always dry).
